The book is an account of the life and death of one of Malkin's sons, Thomas Williams Malkin, and describes some of the accomplishments of this child prodigy who died at the age of six. Benjamin Malkin was also an early friend to William Blake, whose frontispiece drawing for this book was engraved by Robert Cromek. Pages 18-43 in the Prefatory Letter is the earliest account of Blakes's early life and training.
